Commissioning of on-site physiotherapy service reduced HSE inspection

A production company, who had a couple of RIDDOR reportable cases in 2006, commission Connect to provide an on-site physiotherapy service. The purpose being to provide rapid access to physiotherapy for anyone at work who developed musculoskeletal problems. The physiotherapist was employed not only to treat appropriate individuals but to complete workplace assessments on a regular basis, providing recommendations and suggested modifications or improvements in certain cases.

Upon submission of another RIDDOR report by this same company, the HSE decided not to investigate, as they seemed satisfied with the measures that had been documented in the action plan.

Works Accident

Individual sustained a work reported works accident whilst working in a production area. This individual was referred urgently for on-site physiotherapy assessment and treatment, receiving the first appointment 2 days after the initial injury. This particular individual was on the sick for 2 weeks, whilst receiving treatment and returned to work on restricted duties for 1 week and then full duties. If the patient had not received physiotherapy, both Health & Safety and the on-site physiotherapist felt that the absence would have extended by at least 4 weeks.
